Montreal Workers’ Rights Legal Clinic

Based in McGill University, we are a group of law students who provide free and accessible legal information about rights and recourses to non-unionized workers whose rights have been infringed

How it Works

  1. You will first book an intake appointment with a volunteer law student using the form below or via e-mail at workersrightslegalclinic@gmail.com

  2. During the intake appointment, the volunteer will ask you basic questions about your situation and any legal questions that you may have.

  3. Within 1-2 weeks, the student will prepare a short, plain-language memo answering your questions. Note that students in Quebec are only allowed to provide legal information, not legal advice.

  4. After the memo is completed, one of our supervising lawyers will review the student’s answers within 1-4 weeks.

  5. A member of our team will then send you the memo.

  6. Should you require legal advice or representation after receiving the memo, we may then connect you with a lawyer or suggest other options for legal recourse.

Questions and Answers

  • Our services are aimed at workers (i.e. not management). We are primarily focused on the following two areas of law:

    1. Labour and employment law (anything about tipping, wages, hiring, firing, workplace safety, etc.)

    2. Human rights law (discrimination, harassment, etc.)

If you bring us an inquiry that we cannot answer, we will do our best to refer you to someone who can help.

  • To access our services, you must be a non-unionized worker located in Québec with an inquiry about labour/employment or human rights law related to a situation that took place at work

  • No, our services are pro-bono, which means that they are completely free of charge. However, please note that if you do wish to pursue further legal action after receiving information from us, we can provide you with references, but these services will not be free.

  • You do not need to bring anything to your appointment, but if you have paperwork, e-mails, notes, or other relevant documentation about your question or issue, please have them on hand and let your intake volunteer know.
